Asolo Rep Play Reading Club: Get to Know Gunderson 

Asolo Rep’s inaugural Play Reading Club will be centered on the works of acclaimed playwright Lauren Gunderson. Participants will read and discuss six plays selected from Gunderson’s body of work and participate in conversations guided by James Monaghan, Asolo Rep’s Director of New Works and Dramaturgy. Participants will also be encouraged to see Gunderson’s plays, Exit, Pursued by a Bear at the FSU Conservatory, and the Rolling World Premiere of Lady Disdain, at Asolo Rep in June.

James Monaghan

Meet Asolo Rep’s Director of New Works and Dramaturgy

James Monaghan’s dramaturgy work for Asolo Rep includes:Good Night, Oscar; The Great Leap; The Sound of Music; Into the Breeches; Murder on the Orient Express; Knoxville & Hood (Workshops); as well as supporting the outdoor season during the pandemic. Prior to returning to the Asolo, James served the Programs Director at the Hermitage Artist Retreat, wrote about theatrical design as the Tow Foundation Fellow in the Roundabout Theatre Company Archives, created a one-on-one theatrical experience for the National Theatre of Croatia in Rijeka, and worked in the literary department of PlayCo. He has been a resident artist at the Catwalk Institute, featured in the Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas’ newsletter, and directed a digital production of Spring Awakening with the Georgetown Gilbert and Sullivan Society. He holds an MFA from Columbia University and a BFA with honors from NYU and is originally from Houston, TX.

Meet The Playwright

Lauren Gunderson has been one of the most produced playwrights in America since 2015, topping the list thrice including 2022/23. She is a two-time winner of the Steinberg/ATCA New Play Award for I and You and The Book of Will, the winner of the winner of the William Inge Distinguished Achievement in Theatre Award,the Lanford Wilson Award and a finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize. She is a playwright, screenwriter, musical book writer and children’s author who lives in San Francisco. She graduated from NYU Tisch as a Reynolds Fellow in Social Entrepreneurship.
