Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How do I apply using the online application?
A: To use our online application, click here. At a certain point you will be asked to upload your materials. This includes your cover letter and resume in one PDF document labeled with your name. If a writing sample is required for the position you are applying for, you will be asked to upload that PDF separately. Again, remember to label the document with your name. Please read through the material below for answers to any questions that may arise.
Q: When is the deadline for applications?
A: Apprentice applications for the 17-18 season are due March 24, 2017 unless otherwise stated. Fellowship applications for the 17-18 season will be accepted April-May. Please check back in April for a specific due date on fellowship applications.
Q: Can I apply for more than one apprenticeship?
A: You may apply for no more than two apprenticeships per recruitment cycle and must indicate your order of preference. Please submit separate materials for each position (i.e. an education based resume and dramaturgy based resume) on the same online application.
Q: How should I address my application materials? Where do I send them?
A: Submissions may only be made through our online application. Please do not e-mail applications (unless specified) or send physical materials to the theatre. Cover letters may be addressed to Lauren Groves, Business Associate.
Q: How do I get all of my documents into one PDF?
A: The easiest way is to scan your physical documents in the order you would like the PDF to appear digitally. If that does not work, there are many free internet services, like CutePDF, you can use to merge multiple PDF documents into one. Please remember to limit your document size to 1MB, which may require not scanning at the highest quality. Also remember to use your name as the title of your PDF.
Q: Do you accept letters of recommendation?
A: Asolo Rep requires 2-3 references. We do not accept letters of recommendation.
Q: Who should I list as my references?
A: Your references should serve as a sample of people with whom you share positive past work experiences. Mentors, professors, and employers are all good examples. They should be able to advocate for you based on your past work and future potential. Please note that we do not require all references to be theatrical in nature. Phone numbers and emails of references should be provided.
Q: How competitive is the selection process?
A: We receive hundreds of applications a season and average an acceptance rate of 2.5%. As such, the selection process can be extremely competitive due to the sheer number of qualified, motivated individuals applying.
Q: How does the selection process work?
A: Each application is reviewed by the appropriate department once all materials have been received. A first round of interviews with selected candidates will then be conducted via phone or Skype. Most positions may require a second or even third round of interviews. Typically, the interview process runs March through May, but some positions can run through the summer. Applicants can track the status of their desired position through our website.
Q: If am not offered a position at Asolo Rep, can I re-apply for the following season?
A: We are often unable to accommodate everyone who applies, even though they may be qualified for a position with us. As such, we welcome reapplication to our Career Development Program. If you feel you would benefit from what the program has to offer, please re-apply.
Q: Do you accept international applications?
A: International applications are accepted pending the applicant has secured the appropriate Visa or Green Card to obtain a position in America.
Q: I see there are multiple Stage Management Apprenticeships. How does that process work?
A: All positions are filled from the same applicant pool. Preferences on stage management positions are not considered. However, if you are unavailable for a certain time period, please specify in your cover letter (i.e. I am only available for the spring musical positions).
Q: What is the difference between an apprenticeship and a fellowship?
A: Asolo Rep’s apprenticeships are geared towards those who have recently graduated with their bachelor’s degree. Fellowships require a master’s degree or 2-4 years’ experience in the professional world.
Q: How long does an apprenticeship or fellowship with Asolo Rep last?
A: Timing for apprenticeships and fellowships vary depending on position. Most apprenticeships are typically season long, lasting approximately September to May. Fellowships and Stage Management positions are timed to align with our repertory season, and run from late November through April.
Q: Does Asolo Rep offer Career Development Program positions in acting?
A: No, Asolo Repertory Theatre does not offer positions in acting, outside of the FSU/Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training.
Q: Are Asolo Rep Career Development Program positions paid?
A: Asolo Rep provides a weekly stipend.
Q: Does Asolo Rep provide housing?
A: Yes, successful applicants have the option of either living with other Career Development Program participants in apartment style housing or arranging their own accommodations in the area. All bedrooms in Asolo-provided housing are private with shared bathrooms and living facilities. Unfortunately, we cannot allow for pets in Career Development Program housing.
Q: Why is reliable transportation and a driver’s license necessary?
A: Apprentices must be able to provide reliable transportation for themselves not only to and from Sarasota but also throughout their time here. Sarasota is a driving city and a car is a necessity to get around.
Q: What does a Career Development Program participant’s schedule look like?
A: Participants typically keep to a 40 hour week. Each position is dependent on industry standards for their department.
Q: Are there any part-time Career Development Program opportunities?
A: No. Unfortunately, all positions are a full-time commitment.
Q: Could I hold an outside job during my apprenticeship or fellowship at Asolo?
A: Outside jobs must be approved by supervisors and are most times difficult to fit into participants schedules. All positions are full-time and require complete focus and concentration. We recommend spending any additional time enjoying Sarasota, getting to know those here at Asolo Rep, and exploring the vast local arts scene.
Q: How is life in Sarasota?
A: Asolo Rep is located a 15-20 minute drive away from some of the best beaches in the country. Which is to say nothing of the city’s level of culture; there are always shows, concerts, exhibits, and events to attend. For more info, check out this website on Sarasota tourism.
Q: Does Asolo Rep offer any opportunities for high school or college students?
A: Any student local to Sarasota hoping to pursue a career in theatre may contact us at Career_Development@asolo.org for a tour, volunteer opportunities, job shadowing, or possible mentorship.
